Republican presidential debate moderator Anderson Cooper: “Herman Cain, I gotta ask you…two weeks ago you said, don’t blame Wall St., don’t blame the big banks, if you don’t have a job and you’re not rich, blame yourself…do you still say that?
(Audience applause)
Herman Cain: “Yes I do still say that.”
(Wild audience applause)
That exchange from Tuesday’s Republican presidential debate in Las Vegas goes a long way toward explaining what’s wrong with politics today and why nothing ever gets done in Washington. A guy who blames the unemployed for their joblessness was the most popular presidential candidate among Republicans in a recent poll? Seriously? Talk about pull-yourself-up-by-your-own-bootstraps dogma blinding people to what's going on in the real world.
There was a time when the Republican Party was comprised of mostly responsible, sane-thinking individuals who weren’t so far out in right field that it was impossible to reach any sort of compromise with them.
I miss those sort of Republicans.
