ANDERSON COOPER went into the pooper – ratings-wise, that is – right after his TV talk show launched, so longtime pal REGIS PHILBIN offered Chit-Chat Newbie some bare-knuckle advice: DIAL IT DOWN A NOTCH!

Cooper – who looks up to Regis and often subbed for him on “Live” – took the advice to heart, reports a friend.

“Regis tuned into Anderson’s show, and immediately told him he was taking himself way too seriously.

Reege told him, ‘You’re treating every subject like it’s the end of the world and you just can’t sustain that.

"Lighten up, for cryin’ out loud! Light and breezy – that’s what people want in daytime TV.’ ” Cooper took the advice – and it’s working big-time!

After just a month on the air, he’s hit No. 1 among new syndicated TV talkers.
