NEW ORLEANS – The krewe of Endymion, Carnival’s largest parade, will turn to the music world for its 2012 grand marshals and celebrity riders, officials announced Thursday night.
The Grammy-winning pop rock band Maroon 5, with lead singer Adam Levine, will ride as special celebrity guests. Since its debut in 2002, the band has sold over 15 million albums worldwide. The band won the Grammy award for best new artist in 2005. Its most recent album, “Hands All Over” was released last year.
Country music performers Big & Rich and Gretchen Wilson will also ride in the parade and perform at the post-parade Extravaganza inside the Louisiana Superdome, which is already sold out for next year.
Next year’s parade will mark a “domecoming” for the krewe's 2,500 riding members. The group had to host its Extravaganza at the Morial Convention Center this past year because of renovations to the Superdome.
CNN anchor and CBS “60 Minutes” contributor Anderson Cooper will also make a return appearance in the 2012 parade. Its theme will be “Happily Ever After.”
Krewe founder and captain Ed Muniz announced the celebrity riders to krewe members at an event at the Superdome Thursday.
Providing entertainment for the Samedi Gras celebration on the neutral ground at Orleans Ave. on parade day will be local bands the Topcats, Category 6 and the Bucktown All-Stars.
Endymion parades on its Mid-City route on Saturday, Feb. 18.
My favorite story about Endymion:
According to a passage in Deipnosophistae, the philosopher and eloquent poet Licymnius of Chios tells a tale in which Hypnos, the god of sleep, in awe of Endymion's beauty, causes him to sleep with his eyes open, so he can fully admire his face.
