Grim News

As you can see in this post, the economy in the country is in real peril. From my perspective, other than the Crocs, I'd be really sad to see all the other brands disappear from the daily annoyance of their ads. But I rather tolerate their ads than to see all those jobs lost.

12 more reasons why Anderson should not wear a suit during newscasts:

Twelve Brands That Will Disappear By End Of 2010

Huffington Post | Julie Satow | 04/17/09 04:17 PM

The website 24/7 Wall Street has complied a list of 12 brands that will not survive until the end of 2010.

It looked at 100 companies that are racing difficulty, looking at their sales, analysis from industry experts, brand histories and their competition.

Among those that the site doesn't expect to survive is the rental car company Avis, the Gap brand and Borders Books.

The web site 24/7 Wall Street has looked at more than 100 brands to come up with a dozen that will disappear through bankruptcy, acquisitions or spin-offs by the end of next year. Here is a sampling:

The company that owns Avis and Budget Rental Car is struggling to pay its debt, and is “facing an almost perfect storm, with increasing pressure on both revenues and costs, coupled with very large risks on the liquidity and operational side,” according to Barclays Capital analyst Brian A. Johnson. As sales drop through 2009, it will be tough for the company to maintain both brands, and Budget will be eliminated.

Borders is struggling to compete with behemoth bookseller Barnes & Noble while simultaneously contending with competition from online book operations led by Amazon. In the fourth quarter, sales at Border’s stores dropped 15.3%, and it lost $157 million in 2008. It recently extended the terms of a $42.5 million loan to April 1, 2010, which could be the day the company disappears.

Just a few years ago, rubber Crocs were the fastest growing footwear in America with shares trading at more than $72. Now, the shares are below $2. According to Reuters, “analysts say the jury is still out on whether the struggling brand can turn around.” In the fourth quarter, Crocs lost $43 million after making $55 million in the same period the year before, while revenue fell to $126 million from $225 million. According to 24/7 Wall Street, "Crocs won’t make it through the year."

Hearst is facing problems at both its newspaper and magazine divisions. It recently threatened to close The San Francisco Chronicle, and kept the paper open only after the staff agreed to large cuts. It did close the Seattle Post Intelligencer newspaper, and a collapse in print advertising has pushed revenue at most of its magazines down by double digits. As a result, the company is going to have to cut some of its poorest performing magazines.

Gap, which also owns Old Navy and Banana Republic, is a three-brand company but will shed one of these retailers before the close of 2010. In March, same-store sales for the Gap North America flagship brand were off 14%, following a 14% drop in the same month last year. Meanwhile, its year-to-date net sales were $2.08 billion for the nine weeks that ended April 4, 2009, a 9% drop compared with the same period in 2008. According to 24/7 Wall Street, Old Navy will be the brand most likely to disappear.

Eddie Bauer stock trades at less than $1 a share, from more than $8 a share last year. The company has said that it may violate debt covenants this year, and according to the AP, “the retailer is facing an uphill battle because its merchandise doesn’t stand out among competitors." It could be out of business by mid-year.

Palm has been dying a slow death. Its results for the quarter failed to meet Wall Street's expectations, with the technology company selling only 482,000 handsets for the period, down 42% from the same quarter the year before. Revenue dropped from $312 million to $91 million, and Palm lost $95 million.

The Newhouse-owned media giant Conde Nast is experiencing numerous losses. Architectural Digest Magazine, for example, has lost nearly half of its ad pages this year. The company, which has already closed or cut back several of its magazines, will likely close several more.

As it moves closer to bankruptcy, the Chrylser brand will disappear. It has substantially worse sales than Dodge or Jeep, with sales dropping 61% to 45,706 through the first quarter. Dodge and Jeep both sold substantially more cars than the Chrysler brand even thought their sales were down 40%.

United Airlines, American Airlines and US Air are the country’s three weakest airlines. The stocks of all three companies are down more thank 40% so far this year. A stronger carrier such as Continental will likely take over one of the weaker players, most likely United.

I think that to help the mood of the people in this country Anderson should really be very casual with his wardrobe during the newscasts. As you can see above (or rather, you probably didn't see) the column on the left disappears, while the column on the right is very clear, if not very audible. The TV room would be the gayest place to be, especially after a hard day at work. The weekends would be lonely, though.
