Beyoncé International Airport

I could balance that budget with my eyes closed

So, President Obama releases his budget today. Having been an unofficial consultant on the project because of my uncanny resemblance to Alan Greenspan, I can tell you that the budget is quite sound. I don’t want to completely steal the president’s thunder, but I think you folks in Milwaukee are going to enjoy Beyoncé International Airport.

It was an exciting process to be sure but, let me tell you, you don’t realize how big the federal budget is until you see it first-hand. “It’s as big as a phone book,” said Vice President Biden. And I was like, “What’s a phone book?”

You’ll be glad to know that, true to President Obama’s pledge, it’s a bi-partisan budget. For every hundred million dollars spent on pashminas for Nancy Pelosi, an equal amount will be spent on Crocs for Orrin Hatch.

And I know we can all agree that the Lincoln Bedroom was lacking in lava lamps.

As for Marine One, don’t even get me started on the embarrassingly small amount of caviar storage room.

There was much discussion about improving the nation’s infrastructure but fortunately I convinced the president that those funds were better used to give tax breaks to fertility doctors who specialize in patients who already have six kids but want eight more.

And I agree with Vice President Biden: America needs a National Hair Plug Museum.

Despite the high stakes, everything about the brainstorming process went pretty smoothly. Except when a presidential aide asked me what I wanted for lunch. I mean, I don’t think that dirty look was necessary. As if no one visiting the Oval Office had ever asked for a Kahlua Mudslide and a side order of Valium.

And sure, there’s a little money tucked away in the budget for President Obama’s home state of Illinois. But I implore you to reserve judgment. Because even though you might be skeptical now I think you’ll change your mind when you see that gold statue of Roland Burris, one hand held high swearing to tell the truth, other hand behind his back, fingers crossed.

Even if you can’t support that, I’m sure you can support your tax dollars being used to buy new eyeglass frames for Harry Reid.

Anyway, today the president releases the budget for public consumption. Just think of it as a case of beer that fell off the back of a tractor-trailer.

A case of beer that Congress will fight over. Which, I suppose, isn’t so difficult to imagine.

On that note, in honor of the budget, I’m taking tomorrow off from blogging. I’ve earmarked some time for a nap. Have a good weekend.

Anderson Cooper: 50 Cent, Republicans Lost

February 25, 2009 -- 2:41 p.m. by Kali Holloway

There are a lot of reasons that Anderson Cooper comes off as a likeable sort – his indictments of post-Hurricane Katrina relief efforts; the fact that he’s credited with creating (I’m not kidding) “emo-journalism”; his copping to being a regular viewer of The Real Housewives of Atlanta. Last night, during his nightly news program Anderson Cooper 360, he likely scored more bonus points with plenty of viewers for his ability to discuss partisan politics and President Obama’s lofty goals using the analogy of…hip hop beefs.

ROLAND MARTIN, CNN CONTRIBUTOR: Look, what he's doing, he's laying down: Here are the markers in terms of my presidency. I guess, if I had to use an example, sort of when like...Kanye West had his new album, and he said, I want to make it as bad as Stevie Wonder's...

COOPER: In your Kanye West analogy, I guess the Republicans, then, are 50 Cent?

MARTIN: Yes, because...

COOPER: Because they lost...

The message? Don’t let the old money, railroad tycoon-and-designer jeans roots fool you, bizzles. I'm still in the loop. [Idolator]

Gray Hair To Die For

Gray hair not always something to dye for

Some close the cap on youth in a bottle

Karen Goldberg Goff
Wednesday, February 25, 2009

For some men, the fountain of youth isn't found in a high-powered fruit juicer, the weight room or the plastic surgeon's office. The tonic is so simple, and so temporary, that we're often shocked when said man abandons it. "It" is hair color, and it likely is helping Mick Jagger, Paul McCartney and Bruce Springsteen, among others, feel 30 when their bones say 60. Only their hairdressers know for sure, and, as with any rock star's entourage, the secret is safe.

Television host and journalist Anderson Cooper. Getty Images.

Medical stats, however, say 50 percent of people are at least 50 percent gray by age 50.

Even so, it can be shocking when a high-profile man - or woman, for that matter - decides to step off the hair-coloring track. Aging Welsh sex symbol Tom Jones, 68, recently stopped dyeing his locks and showed up on a concert tour with a head of white hair and a matching goatee. What's left of Billy Joel's hair is totally gray. George Clooney has gone to the salt-and-pepper look and apparently has not lost much sex appeal in the process.

Gray hair can say "old." In the case of younger newsmen such as CNN's Anderson Cooper, 41, and NBC's David Gregory, 38, it can say "authoritative."

NBC "Meet the Press" moderator David Gregory. Getty Images.

"You can dye it; plenty of guys do," Mr. Cooper wrote in a 2003 essay for Details magazine. "But if you ask me, you might as well advertise your desperation. Why not just wear a button that says, "I sit in a salon once a month with silver foil in my hair?' "

For most women, though, gray hair can say good luck getting the job or the TV role or a boyfriend. Actress Jamie Lee Curtis famously said she was giving up the trappings of glamour, including hair color, as she neared 50. She is mostly just pitching Activia yogurt these days. Would Madonna take such a stance? Paula Abdul? Julia Roberts?

"There [have] always been different cultural standards when it comes to men and women and hair color, " says Anne Kreamer, author of "Going Gray: How to Embrace Your Authentic Self With Grace and Style." The book chronicles Ms. Kreamer's own journey toward self-acceptance by giving up the brown hair dye.

Ms. Kreamer points out that the use of hair color among men and women is likely at a crescendo right about now. Americans reaching middle age have never lived in a world where hair color wasn't as common as toothpaste. Before the 1950s, only about 7 percent of women older than 40 colored their hair, Ms. Kreamer says. Today, that statistic may be as high as 75 percent.

Ms. Kreamer says baby boomers came of age in the 1980s, "when the grand illusion of permanent physical youthfulness really became widespread and almost obligatory. I don't think it's a coincidence that Ronald Reagan, a man with impossibly black hair in his 70s, blithely and belovedly presided over the country during that decade."

Brian Boye, fashion and grooming director for Men's Health magazine, says men's hair coloring "is really guys' dirty little secret."

Musician Billy Joel. Getty Images.

"It is on the rise," he says, "but guys don't sit around and talk about their highlights the way women do. The main thing that goes on is that men are now being held to the same high standards of youth and beauty as women are. When we see celebrities going the extra mile to maintain youth, [other men] subliminally want to imitate it."

In the Washington area, that form of imitation is not that subliminal. Pirooz Sarshar, co-owner of the Grooming Lounge, says requests for color have risen dramatically at his men-only salons. In 2007, the Grooming Lounge did about 1,800 hair color treatments; in 2008, that number was up around 4,700. Color treatments are $70 and up at the Grooming Lounge.

The key to not looking like, say, Ronald Reagan, is to use a treatment formulated for men, Mr. Sarshar says.

"Achieving gray coverage is tough," he says. "Even if you go to a colorist, you can come home looking like a carrot."

The Grooming Lounge creates gray blending, where color is applied to the hair depending on how much gray a man has, creating a more natural look. Home hair color such as Touch of Gray tries for the same results.

"The stigma of men and hair color is definitely going away," Mr. Sarshar says.

Whether you are Mr. Jagger or a D.C. policy wonk, the goal is the same: to look younger. And while the salt-and-pepper look may work for Mr. Clooney or Sean Connery, it might not give the average 50-year-old an advantage in today's tight job market.

"More men are coloring their hair because they want to stay in the game," says Joy Robinson, public relations manager for Combe, the company that makes Just for Men and Touch of Gray hair color.

Actor George Clooney. Getty Images.

Therein lies an economic quandary. Salon color is expensive, and nearly everyone is looking to cut back. At the same time, when a 50-year-old - gender unimportant - is competing with 30-year-olds in the workplace or a job search, every little bit of youthfulness helps.

"There is no easier way to save than to quit dyeing your hair," Ms. Kreamer says. "Simultaneously, the job market is competitive, and our culture is so youth-driven. If I were a 45-year-old woman concerned about her future, I might think twice about it and suck it up and do what is necessary. It is a sad state of affairs, but it is a tough call.

"However, it can be a competitive advantage to go gray," she adds. "It can show you are confident and self-assured. It communicates a type of poise."

Ms. Kreamer thinks American culture is at a sort of tipping point for hair color. Even with the best colorist, aging stars have been unable to stop time. Mr. McCartney is 66. Mr. Jagger is 65. Mr. Springsteen will turn 60 in September.

"I don't think those men look all that good," Ms. Kreamer says. "If Mick Jagger went to a short, gray cut, he probably would look sexier than someone trying to look 20."

Anderson and the Bikini

COLUMN: Bikini firing was coup for sexism; NBC was wrong

Anton Anderssen

Issue date: 2/24/09 Section: Perspectives

I am outraged that Amy Jacobson was fired from NBC-5 News, after her "Bikini Journalism," visiting "person of interest" Craig Stebic, while on her way to a swimming pool with her kids. I believe if my relative were murdered by her husband, I would appreciate ANY journalist doing ANYTHING to bust him, even it meant showing up as a busty blond in a bare-all bikini. Anderson Cooper has photos on the internet, shirtless in a swimming pool, so why can't Amy Jacobson be seen in a bikini? I think the folks at NBC News are punishing her for revealing skin because she is a woman, not because she was photographed in a bikini.

Jacobson said she had been on her way to a fitness facility with a pool with her young kids when she got an invitation to come over, from Stebic's sister, who was also at the Stebic home. A news report noted that in addition to the above, Jacobson's hair was wet, suggesting she had been in the pool. My hair is wet every day after I shower, and it certainly doesn't mean I was recently frolicking in a murderer's swimming pool.

I think it's time for Americans to get over their Puritan past, and wake up to what really matters in life - having the freedom to do what you want as long as it isn't harming others.

Donny Is Not The Papa x 8

Donny Osmond Denies He's The Octuplet's Daddy

Written by Abel Rodriguez

Story written: 23 February 2009

SALT LAKE CITY - Donny Osmond has told CNN's Anderson Cooper that he has no idea where in the world the rumor came from but he emphatically denies that he is the father of "OctuMom's" eight babies.

Osmond, singer, musician, ex-teen idol told Cooper as they sat having lunch at a local Arby's that he has never even met the woman that Oprah Winfrey calls "The Ronco Baby Machine."

Cooper asked the 51-year-old Osmond if he had any idea at all who he feels could have started this vicious rumor.

Osmond replied that he had no idea. He added that he is extremely puzzled.

The very concerned Utah native did say that he has hired the highly reputable Provo husband and wife investigating firm of Gabriel and Millie Winterwood in an effort to get to the bottom of this false accusation.

He said that he paid the Winterwoods $9,000.

And as he and Cooper sat eating their Chicken Cordon Bleu Sandwiches, with Curly Fries, and a Jamocha Shake, Osmond's cell phone rang.

It was Gabriel Winterwood. He told Donny that they had just narrowed down the source of the rumor to three individuals.

Osmond told Cooper that the first possible source was GOP mouthpiece Rush Limbaugh. When Cooper called Limbaugh and mentioned the situation to him, the GOP mouthpiece became extremely defensive.

He raised his booming voice and said that he was much too busy writing his political bullshit to fool with someone the likes of Mr. Osmond.

The second possibility was GOP talking pencil, Ann Coulter. Cooper spoke to her and confronted her regarding the Osmond-OctuMom allegations.

Coulter who stands 6 foot 3, and weighs 81 pounds, laughed that high-shrill laugh of hers and said, "Look Andy, I have never even heard of this Danny Almond guy, nor for that matter, have I ever heard of Provo, the Winterwoods, Wilmer Valderrama, or the Utah Jazz."

Coulter then told Cooper that she was sorry but that she had to go because she had a bottle of water and a sesame seed waiting for her on her desk.

When Winterwood informed Donny who the third possible source was Osmond almost choked on one of his curly fries.

Donny was shocked when he was told that the third source of the rumor possibility was his very own 49-year-old sister, Marie.

Donny gave Cooper Marie's cell phone number. Anderson put down his Chicken Cordon Blue Sandwich and made a call to Marie.

She answered on the second ring, and when Cooper introduced himself, she suddenly developed a very heavy Spanish accent and said, "Hah-low? hah-low? Bueno bye" and she hung up.

Donny told Cooper that he has no earthly idea as to why his own sister, would start such a scandalous and vicious rumor.

He thought for a moment and then remarked that unless it was her way to get back at him for that time in 1992, when he told the National Enquirer that Marie was pregnant with then Russian President Boris Yeltsin's baby.

Anderson Cooper told Donny that he will personally drive to Marie's home and have a talk with her and try to get to the bottom of this Osmond family mess.

Meanwhile, Donny's hair stylist, Estefania "Licky Lips" Litwin, 42, said that Donny is so upset that he is seriously considering hiring a lawyer and suing his own sister for slander, defamation of character, and ipso facto acappella.

In related news. Ryan Seacrest has stated that the octuplet's mom has been asked to appear on the next edition of American Idol and sing a duet with Paul Anka on his 1974, number one hit single, "You're Having My Baby."

The story above is a satire or parody. It is entirely fictitious.

A few weeks ago I filed a funny blog about a popular Dallas hardware store — Elliott’s Hardware — that offered George W. Bush a job as greeter. Elliott’s Hardware is a Dallas institution and just a few miles away from President Bush’s Dallas home.

Well, the former pres made a “surprise” visit there on Saturday.

After Oscar!

I don't know how Jack Gray and all the bloggers (1,965 comments in all) did it; but I tried and I was not able to watch the Oscars, keep score of which movies were winning what and how many Oscars each, commenting with Alan, feed the doggies... And read everybody's postings while trying to post my comments about Hugh Jackman's sexy, sexy everything! Not possible, I cannot multi-task THAT much.

But this morning I got up and made a bee line for the computer to check Jack's live blog's postings from last night. It seems that everybody had a good time (I did too, just not blogging only watching). And I am glad that Anderson and Erica were able to stop by and do some postings themselves. Plus, Anderson announced that he is working on a new story for 60 Minutes, which is good to know -- I was wondering when he was going to be back on CBS. I only wish he had said what the story was about; but I guess that's a big "no, no" in the journalist's ethics code.

Oscars!

I am watching the OSCARS!

See you tomorrow. Good night.

Caution!

I came across this advertisement for a Polish Jazz Festival, or something like that, I don't do Polish very well, come to think about it I don't do English that well either but here I am, trying. Anyway, I came across this advertisement for a Polish Jazz Festival, or some... I said that alredy, didn't I? Well, the case is that for some reazon I thougth of Anderson right away and I wondered why; after about a minute and a half it done on me! The guy in the poster is naked! And there is a trio of women screaming at him... The guy in the poster is naked! And I saw Anderson's face on it. So here it is, the original and my pervert imagination's version of it. It took me a long time to get the color right; but then, I have nothing better to do. I hope I did a half decent job. Enjoy!

Oh, and by the way, "Uwaga!" in English means Caution! or Attention! As to what it has to do with a Jazz Festival, only the musicians know; but Anderson's poster is sexy.
