Winter Watercooler: "Regulate Homosexuality"? WTF?

• Do You Really Want These People In Charge? David Barton a so-called professor of Beck University suggests that the government should "regulate homosexuality."

This man is not some fringe right-wing radio host. No! He was the chairman of the Texas Republican Party, campaigned with Marco Rubio in Florida, worked on Sharon Angle's campaign in Nevada and "stumped" for John McCain in 2008. This man IS the new Republican Party. If there was any reason to fire up the gay vote, this man is it.

Vote, vote, VOTE. Hey I have an idea. In light of all the LGBT teen suicides recently, how about we “regulate” the hate speech that the Republican party is spewing these days? Fight fire with fire.

• Toucan Sam Protest. The industrious folks at Equality North Carolina have come up with a brilliant response to a homophobic politician. A North Carolina state legislator, Larry Brown, was busted responding to an e-mail sent about House Speaker Joe Hackney receiving an award from a LGBT rights group.

Brown replied to the entire email list “I hope all the queers are thrilled to see him. I am sure there will be a couple legislative fruitloops there in the audience.”

In response, Equality North Carolina will send a box of the sugary cereal to the representative with a personal message for each donation of $5. Let’s show him that all the fruit flavors and not pleased with his bigotry.

• Ozzy Bites Off Westboro Heads. Westboro Baptist, the hateful “church” who pickets the funerals of deceased soldiers and people with AIDS got a smack-down from the prince of darkness.

The Phelps clan are in front of the Supreme Court this week for a case that will decide whether their picketing of soldiers funerals is covered by the first amendment. Margie Phelps and Shirley Phelps-Roper sang a bit from Ozzy Osbourn’s rock anthem “Crazy Train.”

Word got back to the man who spent the 80s being protested by Christian groups and he was not pleased.

“I am sickened and disgusted by the use of ‘Crazy Train’ to promote messages of hate and evil by a ‘church.’” I would warn the Phelpses – have you seen what this man did to that infamous dove?

• Bullied Speaks Out. Anderson Cooper has been pointing a spotlight on the bullying epidemic in our country.

Last week in Weekend Watercooler I posted Cooper’s interview with Andrew Shirvell the Michigan Assistant District Attorney who has waged a relentless bullying campaign against the first openly gay student assembly president at the University of Michigan, Chris Armstrong.

This week, Armstrong appeared on Anderson Cooper 360. Armstrong has been silent on his harassment , until now.

The reason? Like many of us he is horrified by the rash of LGBT suicides recently and wanted to stand up and talk about his experiences. Hopefully, Armstrong’s ordeal will soon end.

Oh – and Anderson Cooper spoke out about something else, too. He was upset that a new Vince Vaughn movie used “That’s so gay” as a joke in the trailer. He complained to Ellen…and Universal pulled it this afternoon.
