Anderson Cooper Plunges into Shark Infested Waters with Sharkman Mike Rutzen
On March 25, 2010, CNN reporter Anderson Cooper joined Mike Rutzen, the Sharkman, for a swim off the coast of South Africa. Before jumping into the ocean, a small group of Great White Sharks were attracted by chumming, pouring fish and bloody remains into the water. Sharks have a tremendous ability to detect blood and could be seen swimming in the vicinity of the boat in thirty minutes. Anderson and Rutzen entered the water without a shark cage.
Rutzen has been studying the ocean predator for twenty years. He travels to a place called Shark Alley just off the coast of South Africa. It is a known hunting ground for the Great White because of nutrient dense waters and presence of seals. His intent is to dispel the fearsome myths of Great Whites as man-eaters. Before Rutzen and Anderson entered the water with the sharks, he determines the intent of the sharks. Viewing how the sharks swim is an indication that they are more curious about the wet suited swimmers and not actively hunting.
Anderson and Rutzen survived the encounter. The Great Whites were simply curious about the swimmers. Rutzen believed this shows a level of intelligence from the predators.
