AC360 Preview: Was Pres. Obama born in the United States?
New York (CNN) – Even though there is ample evidence to establish that President Obama was born in Hawaii, the questions and doubts about Obama’s birthplace – and, therefore, his constitutional eligibility to serve in the nation’s highest office - have continued to come up in the two and half years since his inauguration. Most recently, outspoken real estate developer and potential Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump has raised serious doubts about Obama’s birthplace and now is even suggesting that the president’s original Hawaii birth certificate is missing.
So we headed to Hawaii to see for ourselves what hard evidence we could find that would prove once and for all that President Obama was born in Honolulu on August 4th, 1961.
We tracked down Dr. Chiyome Fukino, the former head of the Hawaii Department of Health. In her first on-camera interview, she told us she saw and examined Obama’s original birth certificate twice and that it is 100 percent authentic. She says there is absolutely no reason to doubt that Barack Obama was born in the United States. And, Dr. Fukino is a Republican who served under the last Republican governor of Hawaii.
We also spoke to Gov. Neil Abercrombie, Hawaii’s recently elected Democratic governor. Decades ago, Abercrombie was also friends with the president’s parents. In an emotional interview, Abercrombie told us that he has memories of Barack Obama as an infant in Honolulu shortly after he was born. Abercrombie also said that he thinks the people who doubt his word that Obama was born in Hawaii are disrespecting the memory of Obama’s mother and father.
In addition to the evidence we found about the president’s birthplace, we are also able to debunk the myth that the president is not releasing his original birth certificate because it would reveal that he is a Muslim, not a Christian. We saw a copy of an original certificate and there is no mention of religion on the document. We wanted to be sure, so we asked both Dr. Fukino and the current spokesperson for the Hawaii Department of Health about this and they both also confirmed that the original birth records do not mention religion.
We’ll have more of those interviews at 10pm Eastern time tonight. We’ll also explain why the certificate of live birth that was released by President Obama, back during his 2008 White House run, is the only legal document issued by the State of Hawaii as proof that he was born in the state.
