The last 60 minutes of 2010 ended in a draw–of sorts–with Fox News winning New Year’s Eve with the most viewers, but CNN winning in the key demographic of viewers 25-54.
On CNN, the heavily promoted New Year’s Eve Live with Anderson Cooper and Kathy Griffin easily beat Fox’s All American New Year’s among viewers 25-54 (715,000 viewers for CNN, to 454,000 for Fox).
But among total viewers, Fox’s countdown to 2011 with Megyn Kelly and Bill Hemmer took the overall win, 1,641,000 viewers to CNN’s 1,532,000.
In the first head-to-head matchup of 2011, the hour between 12 a.m. and 1 a.m., Fox News aired a combination of All American New Year’s and a special New Year’s edition of Red Eye, while CNN stuck with its New Year’s Eve Live, even though hosts Cooper and Griffin signed off about halfway through the hour. CNN won the hour in both viewers 25-54 (793,000 to 479,000) and total viewers, (1,805,000 to 1,428,000).
