The interview below between the head of the GOP in Florida, Jim Greer and Anderson Cooper demonstrates just how partisan the Obama school speech story has become. In the interview the GOP official shows a complete unwillingness to reason in regards to the future Obama address.
Cooper first asks Greer about his own quote in which he alleged that the Obama speech would talk about such issues as health care reform, banks, and taxes. Again and again Greer is asked for any evidence he has that the President's speech would address such subjects. Greer points to the lesson plans accompanying the speech but even the original lesson plans, which have now been revised, did not in anyway address these policy issues.
The truth is Greer like many, but not all, Republicans is simply trying to score cheap political points by attacking the President with no evidence. Republicans have legitimate concerns about the lack of job growth, the rising debt, and even health care reform. I support those Republicans who reasonably oppose the President on these issues even if I do disagree with their viewpoints. Greer's points on the other hand are not real concerns about policy but instead an attempt to attack the President through whatever means possible. I believe if the President was helping an old lady cross the street Greer would accuse him of taking her to a death panel.
Most revealing though is Greer approval of an address to student by President Bush while simultaneously condemning President Obama. Greer claims his concern is with the President addressing policy issues with children, yet when he is shown a clip by President Bush in which Bush directly advocates a policy issue with children Greer is unwilling to criticize Bush. So the lesson is obvious. Whenever a Democrat addresses student, even with a non-partisan message, this is unacceptable to Greer. However whenever a Republican addresses students in a partisan manner this is a "great leader" talking to the children.
