As the "Bob Costas sign-off controversy" enters its second week, there's no sign of it letting up.
As reported earlier this week, video of last week's minute-long on-air rant by First Coast News sports anchor Dan Hicken against NBC's extension of prime-time Olympics coverage past midnight — and into an already-delayed local newscast — was picked up by several websites, including that of London's Daily Mail newspaper.
During the rant, Hicken blamed Costas, NBC's prime-time Olympics host, for the delay.
Since then, the story has made news industry websites mediabistro.com, mediaite.com and others.
And Thursday night, the controversy aired to perhaps its biggest audience, when CNN anchor Anderson Cooper highlighted it in his nightly "Ridiculist" segment during his "AC360" program. The 2 1/2-minute-long segment ended with Cooper saying, in part:
- In fact, a good rule of television, pipe down and love anyone who's giving you a lead-in full of the "Fab 5" gymnasts and Michael Phelps. Because take it from someone who's interviewed Phelps twice for '60 Minutes,' America can't get enough of Michael Phelps.
