Anderson Cooper Saves a Haitian Boy
January 19, 2010 by Jolie du Pre
A Hero or Just Doing His Job? [BOTH!]
Anderson Cooper saved a Haitian boy during a dangerous looting incident as reported on Anderson's 360 blog. In a video, included with photos of the incident and Anderson's blog entry, we can see Anderson, along with a cameraman and others from CNN, in the midst of Haitians stealing from a store. One of the looters threw concrete blocks into the crowd, and one of those blocks hit a young boy. As blood poured from the boy's head onto his clothes and arms, Anderson pulled the boy to safety and then picked the boy up and handed him to a person behind a makeshift barricade.
Jumping into the action is nothing new for Anderson Cooper
Anderson Cooper was born with a silver spoon in his mouth. His mother is the socialite Gloria Vanderbilt. However, that doesn't mean he is afraid to get his hands dirty. Of all the broadcast journalists in modern television, Anderson is one that has placed himself in the center of the action. From what we have witnessed with Anderson Cooper 360, and from what we can read in his bestselling memoir Dispatches from the Edge, we often find Anderson traveling the world to report on situations of utter despair and tragedy. This is his mode of operation. Staying put behind the safety of a news desk does not seem to suit this broadcast journalist.
Anderson Cooper saved a Haitian boy, but is he a hero?
If any reporter is going to jump into the action to save someone in danger, few are surprised that it is Anderson Cooper. During this crisis in Haiti, those who have watched Anderson at work have seen someone come as close to the death and destruction in the region as possible. As he reported on a school building that was destroyed, where many children were killed beyond recognition, it was Anderson who reached down to the muddy ground, picked up an object and realized it was the skull of a child - a skull with one remaining tooth. The smell of dead bodies piled one on top of another is powerful, but Anderson will bring the cameras close, covering his nose with his t-shirt when need be.
Other reporters may have reacted the same way to the boy in danger, but for Anderson Cooper to save the bleeding boy, with no gloves or protection from the child's blood, seems to be business as usual for the energetic and brave broadcast journalist.
