Anderson Cooper opened his new-look daytime talk show Monday with some breaking news.
Prompted by guest co-host Kristin Chenoweth, the 45-year-old television journalism icon opened up on his decision to publicly come out as a gay man in July.
"I think we both had big summers," said the actress, who was severely injured by a falling light on the set of “The Good Wife.”
"I guess I did have a big summer," Cooper responded sheephishly.
Though Cooper’s sexuality was long a fairly open secret dissected in the pages of the gossip columns, the CNN anchor opted to keep his love life private.
"I told my friends, I told my family, I've always been out to my coworkers and stuff,” he said on Monday’s show. “It's just not something I talked about publicly because as a reporter I didn't think it was appropriate. It didn't seem part of my job."
He ultimately was swayed to send an email to fellow gay journalist Andrew Sullivan for publication on The Daily Beast website when he realized his silence could be misconstrued as embarrassment.
That was most definitely not the case.
"I've been torn for a long time between a desire as a reporter to do just do my job," said Cooper. "And at the same time, I think visibility is important.
“I didn't want to send a message that there was anything I was ashamed about or unhappy about or not comfortable with. That was the main thing for me.
"I am the same person I always was, I do the job just the same way."
