Anderson Cooper traveled to Oak Creek, Wisconsin to report live from the scene of the tragic shooting at a Sikh temple on Monday.
A gunman killed seven people and wounded three others at the Sikh Temple of Wisconsin in Milwaukee on Sunday. On Monday, both Cooper and Erin Burnett anchored their shows from Wisconsin.
Cooper sat down with family members of Satwant Singh Kaleka, who died trying to stop the shooter. Kaleka's wife Satpal and his son Amardeep said that he was a true patriot who lived the American dream.
"I would love for [people] to know that he lived his life with the principles that he knew and he was taught at a young age," Amardeep told Cooper about his father.
Cooper will also broadcast from Wisconsin on Tuesday night. CNN was the only network who sent anchors to cover the story live on the ground.
After the interview aired, Cooper also mentioned that he had received some tweets saying that he should let the victims' relatives grieve in peace. "I absolutely agree with that," he said. But he offered some personal and poignant words defending the interview, and pointed out that many family members want others to know who their loved one was.
"They want you to know how they lived their life, not just how they died," he said. "So we go where we're invited. I frankly feel privileged to be invited into their home today to be able to tell you a little bit about one of the people who died yesterday."
