GetGlue Teams Up With CNN & MTV for New Year’s Eve
Yearning to check in to Times Square on New Year’s Eve? If you’re at a party or at home, you likely won’t be able to do so via Foursquare (nor will the thousands of 3G-starved bystanders in Times Square, for that matter), but you can still check in to live coverage of the ball drop from your mobile device via GetGlue.
GetGlue, an app that allows users to check in to various sources of entertainment (such as movies, books and wines), is offering virtual stickers to those who check in to New Year’s Eve Live with Anderson Cooper and Kathy Griffin on CNN and/or MTV’s New Year’s Bash with Whitney Cummings and Jersey Shore cast members Pauly D and Snooki, who will be reporting live from the ball drop on New Year’s Eve. Users can earn an additional sticker by checking in to New Year’s Eve Live with Anderson Cooper and Kathy Griffin before 11 p.m. ET on December 31, thereby alerting their friends of the event ahead of time.
While GetGlue has offered stickers and other, more tangible incentives for shows like HBO’s True Blood and USA Network’s Psych, this is one of its first attempts to drive users to tune in to a live event, says GetGlue CEO Alex Iskold. Iskold isn’t sure if CNN or MTV intend to mention their respective GetGlue offerings on air, although both cable stations have promised to promote them via Facebook and Twitter.
As an interesting side note, Snooki will be inside the ball as it drops. You heard me, inside. Lends a certain momentousness to the occasion, doesn’t it?
Disclosure: CNN is a Mashable content partner.
