Celebrating Gordon Parks

Now we know why Anderson was not at AC 360° last night.

Cool Factor

Fêting Gordon Parks, Barneys, and Acne

"Gordon Parks was cool before I even knew what cool was," said master of ceremonies Anderson Cooper at last night's Gordon Parks Centennial Gala at the MoMA. "He was the first journalist I knew. I wanted to be Gordon Parks and I still do, but I'm too dorky to even get close."

The TV man wasn't the only boldfacer gushing about the photographer and filmmaker, who died in 2006. In the crowd were event chair Karl Lagerfeld, Sarah Jessica Parker, John Legend, Carine Roitfeld, and Clive Davis. Annie Leibovitz, who was honored with a Gordon Parks Award, told Style.com: "He was eminent in Life magazine and that was where any photographer would aspire to work. I think in my lifetime I had one cover of Life and it was Meryl Streep, actually, so I am pretty lucky to be here tonight."

Nearby at Barneys, Dennis Freedman and the DESTE Foundation's Dakis Joannou hosted the opening of a window installation-cum-public art project that explores the relationship between art and fashion. By the looks of the crowd—Helmut Lang and Juergen Teller, both of whose work is hanging in the windows, Inez and Vinoodh, Dustin Yellin, the Proenza Schouler boys—we'd say the relationship is pretty solid.

Meanwhile, downtown, it was a mash-up of cultures with Acne's Jonny Johansson celebrating the label's new Greene Street store with a Swedish midsummer dinner at everybody's favorite new Italian place, Il Buco Alimentaria. Lykke Li performed two songs between cocktail hour, and guests were given crowns of leaves to wear. In keeping with the cross-pollination theme, Johansson says the new shop will be a "little bit of Stockholm in New York."
