Michael: How long have you owned Eastern Bloc?
Darren: Four years.

M: Why the Eastern European, communism theme?
D: I had been going over that way for a while and I sort of liked stuff over there and Eastern European boys. And the East Village is sort of an old Eastern European, Polish neighborhood. We thought it kind of worked and that you could do fun gay things with communism, you know, propaganda and art. It’s sort of a given. It’s very homoerotic, anyway. We kind of have more of a thing where you are somewhere in Eastern Europe and you stumble upon some place and you go in and there is some horrible old drag queen, a bartender, and one customer.

M: So, the Eastern Bloc is famous now for Anderson Cooper dating your business partner?
D: I really have no comment about that.

M: Although, I am curious because I saw an article in The Post…
D: They are not adopting a Haitian baby. [Laughing].

M: I always thought that you were the only owner. That is how I understood it, so when I read that [in The Post] I thought, oh shit!
D: No, it’s not me. No, my boyfriend is way cuter than Anderson. [Laughs] It’s really annoying. Ever since that night when Anderson and Madonna came in people come by and just look around.
