Koran burning update: Clinton condemns, U.S. Embassy, Terry Jones speaks to Anderson Cooper, soldiers in danger (video)

A planned Koran burning set to take place in Gainesville, Florida this Saturday, September 11, 2010 has stirred outcry and sparked the disapproval of government officials. From General Petraeus who leads the war in Afghanistan and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton to the U.S. Embassy, the Koran burning planned by Terry Jones has sparked controversy and fears of long-term retribution against U.S. soldiers in combat. Last night the pastor behind the Koran burning plan, Terry Jones spoke with CNN’s Anderson Cooper. You may see the video of the interview below.
Hillary Clinton Condemns Koran Burning
Hillary Clinton condemned the Koran burning event and said, “I am heartened by the clear, unequivocal condemnation of this disrespectful, disgraceful act that has come from American religious leaders of all faiths … as well as secular U.S. leaders and opinion makers.” You may see a video of Hillary Clinton condemning the [sic]
U.S. Embassy Condemns Koran Burning
The U.S. Embassy also released a statement condemning the Koran burning. Pakistan diplomat at the U.S. Embassy Stephen Engelken said, “We are deeply concerned about all deliberate attempts to offend members of any religious or ethnic group.”
General Petraeus Condemns Koran Burning
Not only has General Petraeus condemned the planned Koran burning but he has said that the act will jeopardize U.S. soldiers who are fighting against radical Muslims in the Middle East. General Petraeus said, “It could endanger troops and it could endanger the overall effort,” Gen. Petraeus said in an interview. “It is precisely the kind of action the Taliban uses and could cause significant problems. Not just here, but everywhere in the world we are engaged with the Islamic community.” The news of the Koran burnings have reached Afghanistan and Muslims in Kabul rallied to protest.
Pastor Terry Jones speaks to Anderson Cooper about Koran Burning
Pastor Terry Jones of the Dove World Outreach Center spoke to Anderson Cooper last night. He also said on video that he wanted the building of mosques in the United States to cease. He said, “Stop Islamic immigration. They are only coming to this country to — to — to take over, to try to enforce, through population growth, through — through political means, through educational means — they’re only coming here to try to enforce and force their laws, their Islamic laws upon us.
We should stop immediately, right now. Stop right now the building of all mosques in America, until they allow us to build churches in Saudi Arabia, until we can build churches in Iran, Iraq, in countries that are dominated by Islam.”
Though Terry Jones told Anderson Cooper he is taking the warnings from government officials seriously, he said that he continues to move forward with his plans to hold the Koran burning.
