Anderson Cooper: The Haitian Hero
They call you the Haitian Hero
for saving a wounded young boy.
I’d say you are really an angel
sent from the heavens above.
With a heart full of sorrow
and a mellow look in your eyes.
You talk about famine, death and destruction
hoping the world can act right.
At a very young age
no more than 10 years old,
you learned that loss can strike like lighting
and leave you feeling sad, angry and cold.
Yet this didn’t stop you
from always looking to strive.
Always moving like a shark
always moving to stay alive.
It all started with the personal search
looking to match inner and outer pain.
Yet you ended up being a hero
for the stuff you did again and again.
Today you travel the world
and where there is conflict, there you will be.
Making people conscious
of the rehab we desperately need.
I know you think about your father
and how much you want him here.
But I’m sure he is proudly watching over you
next to your brother who is also close and very near.
You wish Carter would have never left
and you have longed for the pain to disappear.
But he’s the guardian angel that walks next to you.
He’s the big brother who is always near.
They are both proud to have you on earth
standing up for peoples thoughts and rights.
Taking care of your mother, looking out for others
and always putting up a fight.
Haitian Hero thank you for what you do.
For making us aware of what we don’t see
and for showing us
how much better we can be.
For being a role model
and for showing me this:
A human being can achieve so much
if he is determined to find his bliss.
Although we will never meet
I pray for people like you.
I teach my children about real life heroes
And hope they follow too.
Although we will never meet
I’m grateful for your life.
For alerting me and showing me
How vulnerable we are.
Although we will never meet
You will always be a friend.
Friend to humanity and to children
who you will always defend.
Thank you Haitian Hero
for choosing the path you are walking.
Thank you for opening my eyes
with every word that you are talking.
I am unable to go to Haiti
to lend a helping hand.
But your stories have inspired me to write
about the earthquake, the people and the land.
Hopefully people can read me
as I read and hear from you.
Hopefully we can all come together
to make our world a dream come true.
