'Mad Men's' Jon Hamm reveals his racy movie past

Before he was dapper Don Draper, Jon Hamm had to work his way up the Hollywood ladder. And as he revealed to Anderson Cooper on Friday's "Anderson," at least one of those jobs was a little ... less-than-classy.


"I was a set dresser," he told Cooper during an interview he shared with "Men" co-star John Slattery. "On ... I guess the most politic term is sort of like 'Skinemax' movies."

Now, bear in mind that he was making the set look good and not getting undressed himself. But he did seem a little bit bashful about providing details. When Cooper suggested it was like working on a porn film, he disagreed.

"There's a huge chasm between ... chasm's a terrible world to use ... you don't really want to talk about chasms and porn," said Hamm.

Like soft-focus, filtered, tasteful erotica, as Cooper suggested? No way, said Hamm: "There was nothing tasteful about it."

He made pretty good money, though: "a couple hundred bucks a day," but said "it was depressing."

Particularly since it wasn't about his actual set-dressing talents: As Hamm noted, "If they were focusing on whether the ashtray was in the right place, then someone else had done their job terribly."

"It was a learning experience," said Hamm.
