Viewers must have been startled on Thursday when CNN correspondent Drew Griffin said the n-word on air and was not bleeped out.
The moment came during a discussion about the hate crime conviction of a white Mississippi man named Deryl Dedmond Mississippi, who intentionally ran over a black man named James Craig Anderson. Griffin reported that Dedmond received life in prison after he pled guilty to the crime. He narrated video evidence of the events that took place on that June evening, which showed how Dedmond backed his pickup truck into Anderson and ran him over.
"Deryl Dedmond backs up and gets a good aim and just plows him over on the way out," Griffin said of the horrific crime. "To be absolutely factual, at the end of this, Deryl Dedmond is laughing with his friends and actually called on his cell phone and, pardon my language but there's no other way to say this, and said, 'I just ran over that f---ing [n-word]'"
Host Brooke Baldwin made no comment about Griffin's use of the word.
Some viewers tweeted their surprise at the uncensored word.
My $3.95 of opinion on the subject of the "N" (Nigger) word.
Black people, African-Americans, Caribbean-Americans, whatever black people want to be called is fine with me; and "nigger" is definitely an insult. Now let's look at other words that used to be insults: Gay, Queer Fag, Faggot, all of which have lost most of their place in the dictionary as insults to gay people. Gay people can say them, black people can say them, straight people can say them and we, Gay people, are not offended. Why? Because we took them back and removed their insult status.
Please, don't misunderstand me, Gay, Queer, fag, faggot can still be insults, even if said by Gay people, if they are meant to be insults, i.e. "Get your fag ass out of my house, you faggot!" "What are you looking at, you fucking Queer, won't you like a piece of my cock, uh? You wish, don't you, fag!" "Only gays would wear a faggot pink shirt like this."
But you can use them on everyday, friendly dialogue, as in "My best buddy is Queer." "I really like the way one of my faggy friends thinks about Republicans, he hates them!" "One of my gay friends has a shirt like that and I'd love to get one for myself."
IN MY OPINION: Black people really need to disarm the "N" word and remove it from the insult's dictionary.
BUT, that's only my opinion, I do not intent to impose my way of thinking of blacks. So, for now, "N" it is.
