What differentiates this version of "V" from the two miniseries and series in the 1980s? They used alien invasion as more of a Nazi metaphor, but this time the themes are drawn from terror
The version in the '80s, the general feeling amongst people was that there was a real separation between people and their enemies, or people and people they were really afraid of. In the post-9/11 world, it feels like the people you're scared of could be living next door.
You play newsman Chad Decker. Is he modeled on anyone in particular?
I watch a ton of cable news, so I guess I've been absorbing things little by little. Chad Decker is written pretty specifically, so I followed the lead of the script. In terms of getting ideas, there's a reference in the pilot script that he's an Anderson Cooper wannabe. I took that to mean that he's a kind of 21st-century newsman. He's not necessarily in the mode of Cronkite and Rather - he's more like your buddy who's giving you the scoop, so he's real approachable, connected, has a sense of humor.
How does Chad see himself?
He's a guy who's just treated as the pretty face who should read the news and try not to do anything else. He sees himself as Christiane Amanpour, who should be the center of things. But you take somebody who's not as skilled and not as committed to the truth (as she is), and it could be dangerous.
