Presidents Need To Be Respected
July 1st, 2011
05:00 PM ET
Reporter's Note: President Obama was called a most unkind name on a news show this week. I’m sure he’s been called worse, but as I note in today’s letter, there are still limits to what ought to be said in public.
Dear Mr. President,
I was distressed to hear this report of a former colleague of mine from years back calling you…well, not a nice name on TV. He’s a smart fellow who has lived and breathed politics for a long time, and I know that he knows better. I suspect it was one of those things that happens too much in my profession these days, with people trying to be “edgy” and “provocative” because they think that is what the public wants.

I get that. Look, I’ve always said that I want my reports to be as interesting and as intriguing as I can make them within the boundaries of 1) truth, 2) fairness, and 3) decency. Most of my colleagues, I suspect, have similar views, but sometimes they get carried away.
That said I’m not making excuses for them, because there really are no excuses for such behavior…especially when it comes to the presidency. Oh sure, people may hurl invectives at members of Congress, or Secretaries of Whatever, but the presidency is something special.
When we first moved to DC years ago, our daughters were surprised at their first exposure to the hyper-partisan world here. They would be playing at a friend’s house and hear a parent say something like, “This president is a lying, good for nothing, $#^&@*!!” These parents would actually say much more and much worse, but I won’t even write it here. Anyway, our girls came home confused and upset. Not because we were or were not fans of the president at the time, but rather because we had always assured them that decent people did not say such things about any president. We still believe that in our house.
I have great respect for the right of people to disagree - even vehemently - with any president. They can question his honesty, his integrity, his motives, even his morality; fair enough. But the office demands that such complaints come with respect. I try, even in casual conversation, never to refer to a president by just his last name. I always try to say “President Clinton,” or “President Bush,” or “Mr. Carter,” or “Mr. Reagan.” In a pinch, I may use his full name, like “Theodore Roosevelt.” It may seem hopelessly quaint to some, especially in these boisterous times, but respect for the office of the president is like basic manners - it is most essential when the times suggest it is least required.
After all, if we do not respect the office, why should we expect those who hold the job to respect it either?
So, Mr. President, I hope your holiday weekend is off to a good start. Please call if you have some time.
Regards,
Tom

Real People = Courage
Anderson Cooper: My Favorite Interviews Are With 'Real People Facing Real Life Challenges' (VIDEO)
The Huffington Post | Emily Tess Katz | First Posted: 07/ 1/11 -- 04:09 PM ET | Updated: 07/ 1/11 -- 05:14 PM ET
Anderson Cooper isn't concerned with the big "get."
"I know in TV lingo that's a big deal," he said in an interview with Ben Finley, a booking producer for "AC 360," during a backstage interview Thursday night. "...But the people I really like talking to the most are people whose names we don't even really know, who are experiencing things that are beyond their control.
"Real people facing real life challenges," he said, invoking those in Egypt, Syria, and Libya, "risking their lives by talking to us" as examples. "Those are the people I learn from the most, and I like talking to the most."
He finds that his best interviews happen organically, when he's genuinely interested in the subject and asking questions off-the-cuff:
-
"When you're doing an interview with someone, part of your mind is thinking as a television producer, 'Okay, this needs to fit within a certain amount of time, and I need to get questions about certain topics.' But the other part of me, and I think the bigger part of me -- and I think that when the interviews are the best, that's the part that I listen to most -- is just an interested person asking questions that I'm interested in, and more importantly, listening to what the other person is saying. I think there's a lot of interviews where you sense the person's not really listening, they're just waiting to ask the next question."
He cites his interview with Rep. Louis Gohmert as being one of the most surprising to date (Gomert accused Anderson of "attacking the messenger," screaming "Anderson, you're better than this. You used to be good!") and his chat with Phyllis Diller as being a favorite (when Anderson said "thank you so much for being with us," she retorted, "I'm so happy to be alive!").
"I really like talking to people," Cooper stressed, adding that he never tires of his job.
When asked which of his interviews he preferred, President Obama or Snooki, he took a moment to think about it.
"Obama," he said, with some hesitation.
There was no word on where Obama would rank against NeNe Leakes, unfortunately.

Another Reason To Go Nuts Over Anderson Cooper: Because He Hates Countess Luann, Too
By Eliot Glazer
Honestly, is Anderson Cooper not everyone’s Dream Date? Look at the guy! Even if you’re not into old dudes (we’re not saying he’s old, because he isn’t, even though go ahead and be old if you want!), that head of luscious silver hair is beguiling, to say the least. Maybe it’s that thing where you’re like, yeah, he’s gray on top, but that doesn’t mean he’s gray everywhere, y’know? Is that a thing??? Where am I going with this???
Here’s where I’m going: Anderson Cooper is also sexy because he is a GENIUS. Ever since I heard him talk about the sad state affairs that was Lindsay Lohan‘s mom having a short-lived reality show, I’ve been on board the Anderson Cooper Is The Ultimate Bullsh*t Detector Train (choo choo!). This guy doesn’t parse words about terrible things in the media, and even when he cops to guilty pleasures (including his embrace of some the medium’s finest dirtbags, like Nene Leakes of The Real Housewives Of Atlanta), he’s still the ultimate voice of reason.
Recently, Anderson got to check out the “music video” from “non-singer” Countess Luann Delicatessen called “

"I Love Me Some 'Hoarders,'"
Anderson Cooper hones his daytime image (video)

The promotional drumbeat has begun for Anderson Cooper's foray into daytime TV this fall, which means we're already getting to see a different side to the CNN anchor. Say this much for the guy: he knows his image as a serious newsman is not going to help him much when it comes to attracting the soccer moms.
So Cooper is showing his softer, sillier side these days, as he did in a Wednesday appearance at the PromaxBDA conference where he drew a bright line between what he does on CNN and what he'll do on "Anderson."
Cooper dished on his TV guilty pleasures, which apparently includes everything from Bravo's "Real Housewives of Atlanta" to OWN's "Finding Sarah." Oh, and let's not forget A&E's "Hoarders"--"I love me some 'Hoarders,'" said Cooper, showcasing an informal grammatical style heretofore unseen on CNN.
And if you think he'll be interviewing Timothy Geithner on "Anderson," forget about that. "I'm not going to talk to any of those people," he told the Promax crowd, referring to the newsmakers on his nightly program.

Official: Prosecutors disclose credibility issue to Strauss-Kahn team
From Susan Candiotti, CNN National Correspondent
July 1, 2011 -- 5:49 a.m. EDT
New York (CNN) -- Prosecutors have discovered troubling believability issues with the woman once called extremely credible in her sexual assault allegations against former International Monetary Fund Director Dominique Strauss-Kahn, an official familiar with the case told CNN late Thursday.
Based on these concerns, prosecutors called a meeting Thursday with Strauss-Kahn's defense team to disclose the issues discovered with the hotel housekeeper's allegations, the official said.
The acknowledgment came shortly after an official close to the defense team told CNN there were "serious issues regarding the credibility" of a hotel maid who has accused Strauss-Kahn of sexual assault.
Strauss-Kahn's defense team will ask a judge for bail modifications at a court hearing slated for Friday morning, the official said.
"Prosecutors will not object and, in fact, will ask for a bail reduction," said the official familiar with the case.
NYPD Deputy Police Commissioner Paul Browne told CNN he had "no comment" on the alleged credibility issue with the witness.
The New York Times, citing unnamed law enforcement officials, reported Thursday on its web site that the case against Strauss-Kahn was on the "verge of collapse as investigators have uncovered major holes in the credibility of the housekeeper."
Strauss-Kahn pleaded not guilty June 6 to seven charges involving a May 14 incident in which a housekeeping employee at New York's Sofitel hotel accused him of sexual assault.
In previous court appearances, the judge said that if Strauss-Kahn wanted to leave the city, he would require the court's permission. Strauss-Kahn, who says he is innocent, was previously required to turn over his French passport and United Nations travel credentials to authorities.
Strauss-Kahn was released from jail on bail but is under house arrest in a luxury townhouse in New York's Tribeca neighborhood.
He is under court-ordered watch as part of the terms of his $6 million bail agreement and must pay for 24-hour armed guards posted at the door, as well as electronic surveillance.
Strauss-Kahn, who was considered a front-runner in France's presidential race before his arrest, faces charges that include criminal sexual acts and sexual abuse.
