An Anderson/Gabby baby boom

In another nightmarish economic development, parents in 2011 continued to shamelessly name their children after celebrities without paying royalties.
Call it the Anderson Cooper effect. BabyCenter.com notes the "meteoric ascent" of Anderson on the baby-name lists, climbing 100 spots. Cooper rose 3 percent. Pippa (as in royal in-law Middleton) rose 45 percent. Also seeing a bump: Gabby (as in recovering Arizona Congresswoman Giffords).
"We see it on the list every year, parents being influenced by the media," says Linda Murray, BabyCenter's global editor in chief. "Fifty percent said, 'I'm influenced by celebrities, pop culture, what I see in the news.' If it's someone you really admire, you'll see a big jump."
Celebs also can influence parents to avoid certain names. Charlie (Sheen) had a bad year.
