Do Items Affect Your Mood?

It can come as a "shopping rush" after purchasing a sought-after item, or as a pang of nostalgia when playing with a toy from childhood… either way, items can oftentimes affect a person's mood. Such is the case for the hoarder, Carol, on "Anderson," however her situation is considered a bit more extreme than most.
"The items [she owns] are acting as an external means of mood control. So, it's like her anti-depressant," says Dr. Rebecca Beaton, who has worked with Carol and her family in trying to help her. "When she sees the item she feels pleasure from it. It gives her a sense of security… it might even be a part of her identity."
Dr. Beaton says Carol feels a wide range of emotions from different items, from guilt to attachment to happiness. Watch the video below to learn about how and why certain items can manipulate a person's mood.
